Unlike many products where there are many brands and models to choose from – in commercial vehicle gps route devices there are really only two major brands. Garmin and Rand McNally.
I think Rand McNally is the more well known brand inside the community of truck drivers due to the fact they have been producing a heavy truck road atlas for many years. However many drivers report this companies GPS to have problems with shutting down and locking up.
Also you must supply your own WIFI through a hotspot or MYFI device for the traffic and weather to work.
These issues were the deciding factor for me to purchase the Garmin Dezl 770 LMTHD model. I have been using it in my truck for 2 months now and I am very happy with it. I purchased a refurbished model from Amazon to save money.
Because there is little competition in the commercial truck routing business these units are not cheap compared to a normal car GPS.
Also routing a big heavy truck legally is very complex. There are many federal and state laws concerning weight, lenth, number of axels, special routing for hazmat depending on the type of hazmat load you are hauling.
This is also the reason you should have a model specifically designed to route commercial trucks. Tickets for being on roads you are not supposed to be can be very expensive. Hitting a low bridge can end your career as a CDL truck driver.
Based on my experience I recommend the Garmin Dezl 770 or the smaller version which is the Garmin 560LMT.
The traffic and weather data come without needing to supply a WIFI internet connection to the device and updates to the maps and regulation updates a free for life.
I own a portable Garmin for boating and hiking and it has never let me down and has lasted many years without breaking.
