Stuck here in Kentucky. Owensboro is a small town wrapped around a bend on the Ohio River, across the river is rural Indiana, farm land. I bet they call this area Kentuckiana. Or is it Kentuckyana?.
To me it’s a small town however google maps {link} says it’s the 4th largest city in Kentucky. I noticed that fun fact when I was looking for the things to do in Owensboro link which is missing for this area on Google Maps.
Once again I am thinking about dropping my trailer and going exploring in the tractor bobtail. I am feeling lazy and I actually enjoy sitting around taking in the fresh air and doing nothing really. I am only motivated to go do something so I have something to write about and to take pictures for this blog and Instagram.
This is when I realized I really need to get a quality folding bicycle. If I had one I would definitely try to go check out the banks of the Ohio river.
There is a March of Dimes fundraiser cook out “yard party” going on today on Frederica Street that a local 92.5 FM country radio station is putting on, 5 bucks for a complete lunch. The continuous promos are making me hungry. Thoughts that race through my mind “is there a place to park” “what about low bridges and truck restrictions”.
A folding bicycle would solve this problem and help with the getting even fatter as a trucker problem too.
The truck stop Hillbilly’s II I am parking at had great WIFI last night and this morning. On my LG G Stylo phone I was able to watch Netflix and have it play smoothly with minimal red circles. It worked better here than at any Pilot Flying J I have been to and had to pay for sub-par WIFI access there, here it’s free as WIFI should be.
Sure enough as soon as I unfolded the laptop the little yellow caution sign “no internet access” popped up on my computer.
Still motivated to write this blog post I opened up Scrivener and that’s what I am using to write this post. At least I’ll have a back up since Scrivener automatically saves and archives everything. Maybe I can edit these posts into a USA road travel guide for truckers and RV Travelers.
Why am I stuck here in Kentuckiana?
Same old story showed up at the receiver on-time on a Friday at 10:00 AM sharp. They say they are too busy to unload me and I am not due till Monday.
I’ve only been back on the road for a couple of months and already I fee like I’ve heard that BS line a million times.I Drive 854 miles in less than 24 hours then hurry up and wait.
My re-load to Laredo Texas cut-off time was 2 PM and I did not get unloaded until 2:15 so the load was canceled and the new shipper closed and went home. All the next shipper had to do was wait 30 minutes past 2 knowing I am almost empty, nope that’s not how this trucking business works.
We even have a saying for preventable hiccups on the road. “It’s Trucking” or “That’s Trucking” simple yet everyone who has been here done that understands completely.
If you are reading my blog as research to see if you want to drive (CDL) a commercial semi tractor trailer (CMV) over the road don’t let stuff like this discourage you. It’s a tough life that takes quite a bit of getting used to. If you are prepared both mentally and with the stuff you need to make your life comfortable on the road it can be a very rewarding experience. This is my 2 time giving it a try the first was for 3 years with 3 different companies 17 years ago in the late 90’s.
Sitting in this luxurious but very small truck sleeper away from home with nothing to do is the hardest part of being an Over The Road Truck Driver for me. It sucks and last night I wanted to quit, change companies or buy my own truck so I would have more control and be able to look for my own loads 24/7 instead of relying on a 9 to 5 office who only gets 10% of the load pay to dispatch my truck.
The thing is I feel this is what I am meant to be doing at this time in my life. I feel I am healing my mind and soul being out here on the road getting paid to travel all over the USA for four weeks at a time as a Trucker.
After being in an abusive micro managing office for the past 17 years even with the issues that come up in trucking – I think I am in a better place right now than I have been in years. I am as close to being independent as you can be without all of the liability of owning my own tractor and trailer. You can be independent too by going with a smaller company or driving for an owner operator leased onto a smaller company.
I checked my blood pressure last weekend and it was 139 over 78, I need to look at what it was before but I think it’s better now. I kinda went off course on the topic but this is a blog about over the road travel and this is a big part of being successful at getting paid to travel. The right mindset that is. Without the right mental attitude is could be a miserable life out here. That’s probably I see so many mad looking truckers in my travels.
Well since I’ve veered off topic I think I’ll work on my next page. How to get paid to travel the as an over the road trucker and enjoy it. Or, Do you have the right mental attitude to be an Over The Road Truck Driver?
What do you think?
